New Canaan Grade 3 Red defeats Darien, 8-0

Those New Canaan fans who braved the rainy weather and early start on Saturday at Darien High School were rewarded as the New Canan Red third grade football team posted an 8-0 victory over Darien.

The tone was set early with a 15-yard quarterback keeper up the middle by New Canaan's Chris Canet on the first play from scrimmage, with key blocks from Aidan Blair and Ben Marshall. The drive continued with inside and outside runs by Hayden Shin and Tommy Towers, and was capped by a 30-yard touchdown bootleg run by Canet, which fooled nearly everyone on the Darien defense. The Rams earned the 2-point conversion on a wingback misdirection run by Towers.

New Canaan's defense was the story of the day, however, by confidently securing the first of several “three-and-outs” on Darien’s first possession, with stops by Nicholas Radman and Griffin Koch. The Rams' offense ended the first half with carries of 17 and 10 yards by Canet and Towers, with holes created by the sturdy front line of Jack Murphy, Aidan Blair, Will Thomas, Dylan Kortman, and Bryce “Bulldozer” Harrell.

New Canaan’s defense continued to stifle the Blue Wave, not allowing a first down until well into the second quarter. Strong tackling by Henry Cannon, Mac MacHale, Johnny Dunn, Jackson LaMorte, and Charlie “Bullrush” Borthwick prevented Darien from gaining any real offensive momentum.

With the clock in the Rams’ favor, the offense continued to grind well into Darien territory throughout the second half, with punishing runs by Shin, who seemed to require three or four  players to bring him down each carry.

Only a couple of offensive penalties prevented the Rams from adding to their lead early in the fourth quarter. With about five minutes remaining, the Blue Wave tried to jump start their offense in an attempt to tie the score, but the Rams' defense was too overpowering. Darien tossed a pass on 4th-and17, but it was almost intercepted by Borthwick.

The NC 3rd Grade Red Rams, who improved to 2-2, will face the Wilton Bantam 3 White on Saturday in Wilton.

New Canaan U-11 Black Soccer Team falls to Bethel

The New Canaan U-11 boys Black soccer team lost a 6-0 decision to Bethel on Sunday.

New Canaan kept the game close in the first half, only trailing 1-0 at the intermission, but Bethel scored five unanswered goals in the second half.
