The Connecticut Ice Cats U14 girls ice hockey team enters the 2011-12 season with high expectations after a similarly rostered U-12 team went to nationals two years ago.
The team kicked off its schedule with a home and away sweep of the perennial powerhouse New Jersey Colonials by scores of 3-1 and 4-1. Meg Fay's hat trick led the way in the first game as the Ice Cats peppered 44 shots on goal in a high energy performance.
Game two featured a trip to New Jersey, where goaltender Brooke Jonsson led the team to victory holding the opponents scoreless until the waning moments of the game. Elizabeth Growney found the back of the net twice while Christy Conley and Katie Zaro chipped in with a goal apiece.
The team wisely utilized the defensemen in the offensive zone, resulting in three of the goals starting from the point with two assists from Amanda Sload and one off Catherine Granito's shot.
Natalie Shindler and Allegra Molkenthin led a strong defensive effort and outstanding two-way play by Emma Stevens, Kate DeFrino, Schuyler van den Broek and Lauren Cicero limited the number of Colonials' scoring chances.
The Ice Cats hope to continue their winning ways in Providence at the "Fight Like a Girl" tournament this coming weekend.
SCOR U-13 team falls to Wilton
The SCOR girls' U13 "Orange Crush" team dropped a 3-2 decision to Wilton on Sunday.
Coach Mark Ingala and manager Terrence Rychlik noted steady improvements in handling and passing skills.
"Sunday was a very exciting game for me as well as the girls even though we were on the losing side in the end," Ingala said.
Elizabeth Middlebrook scored both goals for New Canaan. Meghan Rayda appear to tally a third goal for the team, but it was called back because of an offsides ruling. Middlebrook and Lilian Epley each spent a half in the goal.
