New Canaan Red Posts 19-0 win
With the distinctive sound of 3,000 motorcycles participating in a memorial parade in the background, the New Canaan fourth grade Red team defeated Westport North 19-0 Sunday.
New Canaan received the ball first and on the fourth play of the first drive, Robert Evans scored a 40-yard touchdown run up the middle for a 7-0 lead. The offensive line, led by Charlie Mullaney, Greg Korsun, Steven Hoge, Andrew Morse, Jack Anderson and Thomas Marshall, executed their blocks perfectly to open a hole for Evans.

Westport's first position ended in a punt. Its second position ended with a turnover as Evans recovered a fumble. Big defensive plays by Andrew Smith, Tyler Saitta, Morse and Jack Hynes jarred the ball loose.
Evans then tacked on a 35-yard TD to make it 13-0 at halftime. This time, key blocks were provided by Dylan McDonald, Nick Gilio, Marshall and Mullaney.

After Westport punted on its first possession of the second half, a 25-yard pass from quarterback Andrew Smith to Marshall gave New Canaan a first down at the 1-yard line.
However, Westport came up with a goal-line stand, stopping New Canaan on the six-inch line.
But Westport was forced to punt again Gilio scored a hard-fought touchdown on a dive play into the middle of Westport's defense. Gilio carried three defenders into the end zone, giving New Canaan a 19-0 lead.
The game ended after Tyler Saitta sacked the Westport quarterback for a 15-yard loss.
Other strong defense performances were turned in by Nicky Hoge, Xander Arnone, Alec Kazlauskas, Diego Ferreira, Riana Afshar, Zach Boland, Jaden Konspore and Owen Lynch.
Jay Tennis Tourney Set for Sept. 17
The seventh annual Allan Jay Memorial Tennis Tournaments are set for Sept.17 at New Canaan's Meade Park and other area clubs.
This tournament has grown to become one of New Canaan's premier sporting events with more than along with more than 100 spectators.
Last year's championship draw included several players who competed on the ATP Tour, including two NCAA Division II champions and one former Davis Cup player.
There are three separate doubles draws to accommodate all levels of player. Any tandem, regardless of gender is eligible, but one player on the team must be at least 15 years old.
There also are separate sections for mixed teams, husband and wife, and parent and child. The cost per team is $40.
The semifinals for the elite draw is 3 p.m., followed by the finals at 4 p.m.

SportsNight Tickets on Sale
Tickets for the Fairfield County Sports Commission's seventh SportsNight awards dinner are available at a discounted price until Sept. 16.
SportsNight is Monday, Oct 17 at the at 6 p.m. The six new members of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame will be inducted that evening. The 2011 honorees are: John Bagley (Bridgeport), Bennett Salvatore (Stamford), Joe DeSantis (Fairfield), Ceci Hopp St. Geme (Greenwich), Charlie Bentley (Bridgeport) and the late Albie Loeffler (Westport).
Among the 15 Sports Persons of the Year being honored include Darien High field hockey coach Mo Minicus, USA Hockey U18 World Champion Ryan Haggerty of Stamford, UConn baseball standout L.J. Mazzilli of Greenwich, State of New Canaan, New England Babe Ruth Tourney organizers Jim and Joe Parlanti of Norwalk and the 2010 FCIAC champion Class LL runnerup Staples High boys soccer team.
Dinner tickets are priced at $115 and will be raised to $125 after Sept. 16. Tables of 10 seats are priced at $1,150 and will go up to $1,250 after the 16th.
