New Canaan Reds tie in opener
The New Canaan Red fourth grade bantam football team opened its season Sunday with a 13-13 tie against Ridgefield Black.

New Canaan opened the scoring on Robert Evans' 70-yard touchdown run as key blocks by Charlie Mullaney, Thomas Marshall, Dylan McDonald, Alec Kazlauskas and Greg Korsun set up the long run. The attempted extra point run by Nick Gilio was stopped just short of the goal line.
New Canaan's defense was stellar early in the game, allowing only four plays on each of Ridgefield's first three possessions.
The defensive effort was led by the linebacking corps of Andrew Smith, Robert Evans and Nick Gilio, ends Christopher Carratu and Thomas Marshall, tackles Charlie Mulaney and Greg Korsun, guards Andrew Morse and Jack Hynes and defensive backs Colby Gardiner and Xander Arnone.
Diego Ferreira ended Ridgefield's fourth possession with an interception.
On New Canaan's fifth possession, runs by quarterback Smith and Gilio, gave the Reds excellent field position at Ridgefield's 25-yard line.
Evans then scored his second TD of the day on a sweep with Gilio, center Steven Hoge, Korsun and Marshall providing the key blocks. Gilio converted the extra point to make it 13-0.
Ridgefield pulled within 13-7 on a long scoring drive that took the entire third quarter, then pulled even with another touchdown on its third possession of the second half.
Carratu, Smith, Evans and Xander Arnone preserved the tie by stopping the conversion attempt.
Ridgefield got another chance, but New Canaan's Colby Gardiner sealed the tie with an interception with just minutes left.

Elite Fall Catching Clinic
New Canaan baseball coach Mitch Huffman will be running six sessions of the the Elite Fall Catching Clinic at the Bobby Valentine's Sports Academy. The camp runs from Oct. 3 through Nov. 21 with no sessions on Oct. 10 and Oct. 31 due to holidays.
All aspects of catching will be covered with a curriculum designed by Hoffman: receiving, blocking, throwing, footwork, calling pitches and the mental approach.
There will be two ages groups: 2Ages 9-12 on Monday from 4-5 p.m., and ages 13-18 on Monday from 5-6 p.m.
Clinic price is $210 ($35/session). Registrations will be capped at six players. Catchers should bring all of their catching equipment to each clinic.
