New Canaan's Max Pacioretty recorded his firt career hat trick Thursday, leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders in Uniondale, N.Y.
The 23-year-old Pacioretty scored once in each period, including an empty-netter with one second remaining to clinch the win. The three goals give him a team-high 22 for the season, surpassing Eric Cole, who has 20.

In his fourth season, Pacioretty already had eclipsed his previous career best of 14 goals set last season in just 37 games. He played in his 52nd game Thursday, matching his career high established in the 2009-10 campaign.
The Canadiens won their third straight game to climb within nine points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Sarah Mannelly scored 20 points Thursday as the girls basketball team defeated Fairfield Ludlowe 44-37 to keep their slim FCIAC playoff hopes alive.
The Rams, who won their second straight game, improved to 10-8 and 8-8 in the FCIAC.
New Canaan entered Thursday trailing Darien, Stamford, Staples and Fairfield Warde, who are all 9-6, and Westhill, which is 8-7, in the FCIAC standings.
Kelly Armstrong added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Rams, who outscored the Falcons 11-4 in the final quarter to secure the win. The contest was tied 33-33 after three periods.
Ludlowe held a 23-17 lead at the half, but the Rams outscored the Falcons 16-10 in the third period to forge the tie.
Sarah Nesi scored 10 points and Julia Vonehr added eight to pace Ludlowe, which dropped to 7-11 and 6-10. The Falcons need to win one of their remaining two games to clinch a state tournament berth.

Mark Cerulli and Connor Peterson each scored 17 points at the Fairfield Ludlowe boys basketball team doubled up New Canaan 62-31 on Thursday.
The contest was close in the first half with Ludlowe holding leads of 14-11 after the first quarter and 25-20 at the intermission.
However, the Falcons surrendered only 11 points in the second half to break open the game.
After outscoring the Rams 18-9 in the third quarter to open a 43-29 lead, the Falcons turned the contest into a rout with a 19-2 burst over the final eight minutes.
Nick Dupuy scored 14 points to lead New Canaan, which is still winless in FCIAC play this season. The Rams dropped to 1-15 and 0-14.
Ludlowe improved to 6-10 and 6-8 with its third straight victory.
