The New Canaan girls hockey team improved to 18-1 Monday with a 6-2 victory over Greenwich.

The Rams trailed 2-1 in the second period, but responded with five straight goals to improve to 13-0 in the FCIAC heading into Saturday's regular-season finale against Darien.

Greenwich dropped to 11-5-1 overall and 10-4 in the FCIAC. Both New Canaan and Greenwich have made the FCIAC playoffs, which begin next Wednesday with the semifinals.

Olivia Hompe scored four goals for New Canaan, giving her 58 for the season, while Holly Burwick and Madzie Carroll had the other goals for the Rams.

Meghan Spezzano and Hannah Jeffrey scored for Greenwich, which lost to New Canaan 7-1 earlier in the season.

Britt Gardella stopped eight shots for the Rams while Dart Freccia made 15 saves for the Cardinals.

In addition to New Canaan and Greenwich, Darien and Ridgefield also have secured spots in the FCIAC playoffs.

The matchups will be determined following Saturday's games. Greenwich could still finish anywhere from second to fourth. New Canaan will take on the No. 4 seed in the semifinals.

The girls basketball team was eliminated from the FCIAC playoff race Monday following a 51-48 loss to Westhill.

Sarah Mannelly 28 points was not enough for the Rams, who dropped to 10-9 overall and 8-9 in the FCIAC.

Kelly Armstrong added nine points for the Rams, who forged a 23-23 tie at halftim, but Westhill turned around the game by outscoring New Canaan 12-5 in the third period to take a 35-28 lead into the final period.

Tyler Evans scored 18 points and Megan D'Alessandro added 11 for the Vikings (10-9, 9-8), who are still mathematically alive for the final playoff spot.

Each team will look to clinch winning years in their regular-season finales on Wednesday.

However, New Canaan has to play at undefeated Danbury while Westhill is home for playoff-bound Norwalk.

The Westhill boys basketball team posted a 68-54 victory over New Canaan on Monday as Chris Walter and Tony Dobbinson combined for 44 points.

Walter scored 24 points and Dobbinson added 14 for the Vikings, who improved to 12-5 overall and 11-4 in the FCIAC.

Sam Dorrissant - the third member of Westhill's Big Three - added 12 points for the Vikings, jumped out to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter and nursed the lead from there.

Much to its credit, New Canaan made it interesting in the second half, pulling within 46-42 after three quarters.

But Westhill woke up it the fourth quarter and outscored the Rams 19-11 over the final eight minutes to win going away.

Willie Burger scored 20 points and Nick Dupuy added nine for New Canaan, which dropped to 1-16 and 0-15.

The New Canaan boys hockey team gets another shot at Darien when the rivals clash at the Darien Ice Rink on Tuesday (4 p.m.)

Darien is coming off Saturday's 4-2 showdown victory over Ridgefield that extended the Blue Wave's winning streak to 11 games. That decision also snapped the Tigers' 14-game winning streak and left Darien (12-3, 9-0) alone in first place in the FCIAC.

New Canaan (10-6-1, 6-3) is experiencing an up-and-down season and is tied with Trinity Catholic for fifth place in the FCIAC standings. Westhill (5-9-1, 5-3) is right behind the Rams.

Under the FCIAC's new playoff format, only the top six teams qualify for the tier one playoffs.

Darien is looking to complete a season sweep of New Canaan, having defeated the Rams 6-1 on Dec. 19. That was before the Blue Wave embarked on their winning streak as they lost to Hamden and West Haven to fall to 1-3.

New Canaan is coming off Friday's 4-1 win over Trumbull and has won two straight. The Rams have another tough game at St. Joseph on Saturday before concluding the regular season next Monday against Wilton.
