The New Canaan eighth grade boys Black team finished its basketball season and middle school careers this past weekend as the Fairfield County Basketball League (FCBL) regular season A Division champions.

After starting the season 0- 4 in league play, the boys came together to finish with an overall record of 20-10.

The eighth grade team began playing together five years ago when the boys were in the fourth grade. They entered an East Haven tournament after their YMCA recreational season had ended and have stuck together ever since. They began in the FCBL the following year as fifth-graders and had instant success winning the A Division championship that year as well.

During their careers, the team posted a record of 71-29. Coaches Billy Lovett and Rob Sechan attribute the team's success to chemistry and hard work.

Original team members Jordan Sechan, John Fox, Kyle Smith, Shannon Smith, William Hooks, Lucas Niang and Gardner Read were joined by new teammates Sam Larson, Matt Hall, Thomas Seelert and Robbie Smith at the start of this year.

Highlights of the season included wins over East Haven, Bridgeport Trumbull Gardens, Norwalk Carver Center, Greenwich and Ridgefield on a last-second shot by William Hooks.

"All players contributed in practice and games," Lovett said. "While Jordan Sechan and Kyle Smith were our offensive standouts, John Fox and Shannon Smith were emotional leaders and made key all around contributions nearly every game."

The team entered the FCBL tournament on Saturday and opened with a 40 - 33 win versus Greenwich. On Sunday, the New Canaan group lost 61-46 to New Castle, N.Y.

"This year is especially gratifying because the team overcame the loss of several key players from last years' team to other sports and a heavily depleted roster due to injury in the first several games," Sechan said.

"The addition of 6-foot-3 Matt Hall and significant contributions from Gardner Read and Lucas Niang made up for the lost talent and time healed the wounds that hobbled the us early in the season. After that we really came together and started to perform. I am so thankful to have had an opportunity to coach such a great group of boys and with coach Lovett."

The team entered the FCBL tournament on Saturday and opened with a 40 - 33 win versus Greenwich. On Sunday, the New Canaan group ran into a very tough New Castle, NY team and lost 61 - 46.

"While this is not the way we wanted to end our season, it does not diminish what we achieved this year or the memories that these boys have from their four years together," Lovett added.
