New Commuter Parking Spaces Coming To New Canaan

First Selectman Kevin Moynihan made the announcement Thursday.

NEW CANAAN, CT — An additional 60 commuter parking spaces will be added to New Canaan's Talmadge Hill Railroad Station parking lot in the near future, bringing the town's total commuter spaces to just over 1,100, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan announced Thursday.

The new spaces come courtesy of the state Department of Transportation, which recently agreed to lease land that it has used for construction staging at the corner of Talmadge Hill and Old Stamford roads.

How much the town will have to pay to lease the property has not yet been determined, but Moynihan says it will be a small, nominal amount, in part because the town expects to spend about $300,000, or $5,000 per space, to build the parking lot.

Funding for the project has already been set aside from money generated from parking fees, according to the First Selectman.

"Essentially, it will be a new level or tier of parking at the station," said Moynihan, during a press briefing Thursday morning in his office at Town Hall.

The new spaces will be daily fee spots, and 60 of such spaces an upper tier at the station will be converted into permit spots.

Currently the waiting list for station parking permits is several hundred residents deep. However, because the town over-sells permits compared to the number of spaces (the formula works out to 1.3 permits sold for each commuter parking space), the new spaces will cull just under 80 names from the waiting list.
