Prospective Buyer Sought For New Canaan's Vine Cottage

Vine Cottage is a town-owned large yellow Gothic Revival house - with a Queen Anne-style tower - located at 61 Main St. in New Canaan.

NEW CANAAN, CT — The town has issued a Request for Proposal for prospective buyers of the town owned property named Vine Cottage at 61 Main St. in downtown New Canaan.

Vine Cottage is the large yellow Gothic Revival house - with a Queen Anne-style tower - that was built in 1860. The town acquired it in 1997, and currently houses the Department of Human Services there.

"The Town contemplates that the acquisition may be accomplished by means of either a cash purchase or a ground lease and also desires to transfer the building to a private purchaser/investor who will preserve its historic character as the property may be added to the Town’s Historic District," town officials stated.

At its June 18 meeting, the Board of Selectmen approved the RFP, with First Selectman Kevin Moynihan and Selectman Nick Williams voting in favor, and Selectman Kit Devereaux voting against.

Qualified parties are invited to submit their proposals, and have until 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, to do so.

The Town states that it "reserves the right to reject any and all proposals or any part thereof, to waive defects in the same, or to accept any proposal or any part thereof deemed to be in the best interest of the Town."
