Regan's Lawyer Seeks Plea Agreement

NORWALK -- The criminal case of a New Canaan of striking and killing a town pedestrian with her car last August may require a judge’s assistance to reach a plea agreement acceptable to all of the involved parties.

The defendant, Kate H. Regan, 32, appeared in state Superior Court in Norwalk Tuesday, during which her attorney, John R. Gulash Jr., told Judge Bruce P. Hudock the judge may have to join discussions on how to resolve the case.

Gulash said he was advising Hudock the case may require a supervised pre-trial hearing because of its complexity, the interests of the deceased’s family, and so, “we all know where we stand.”

Hudock replied, “We’ll see how it goes the next time,” but warned Gulash the state’s attorneys’ office in Norwalk objects to supervised pre-trial hearings until a plea offer has been made by the prosecutor and rejected by the defendant.

Standing beside Gulash was attorney Frederic S. Ury, of 82-year-old Krishna S. Jayaraman, a resident of Oenoke Ridge Road struck and by a car while emptying his mailbox.

Police say Regan struck Jayaraman with her and failed to stop.

Following her Nov. 3, Regan was released after posting a $10,000 cash bond.

Negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility in an accident involving serious injury or death are motor vehicle violations in Connecticut. Eis the more serious charge, with Regan facing a fine of up to $10,000 and ten years in jail.
