St. Luke’s Celebrates Veterans & Grandparents

On November 10, a cherished St. Luke’s tradition took place. Fifth grade students invited grandparents and special friends to visit school and celebrate Veterans Day (a day early) together.

This annual celebration includes an all school assembly to recognize military veterans across the country—and many, including grandparents, from our own community. Each veteran receives a letter of thanks from St. Luke’s Support Our Soldiers Club. Included in this tribute is the service of two faculty members, Dave Havens (Navy) and Desiree Smock (Marine Corps).

Jim Foley, Assistant Head of School for Leadership & Innovation, addressed the crowd saying: “We salute and honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces, risked their lives in that service, and in many cases died in the course of that service...This also is a day in which we celebrate the ideal for which all of those brave men and women served – namely ‘peace,’ as signified by the word ‘armistice.’ ... Given our school’s emphasis on service – in our mission and in our motto of “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve” – we now take great pride in recognizing the veterans in our own community.”

Veterans stood as their names were called and the crowd responded with an enduring standing ovation. Head of School Mark Davis says having grandparents at the Veteran’s Ceremony makes it particularly meaningful: “To see ten year olds look up at their grandparents while the crowd cheers. You know they are seeing them through new eyes. They’re heroes.”
