It’s year four for this weekend of wild ideas brought to life. According to St. Luke’s designLab director Michael Mitchell, “In its purest form, the Hackathon is time and space for students to learn and to create. Aided by both digital and physical tools, and through the help of mentors and faculty, students are given the freedom to explore with one guiding principle—learn something new.”
The event grows each year and supervised teams from other schools are welcome. Mitchell loves that many of the same students return year after year, but hopes to attract new students, especially those who shy away from science and engineering: “We welcome all Makers, especially those students who have not yet identified themselves as makers. You can be a coder, builder, a designer, or a painter. Problem solvers, app inventors, story tellers, and prop makers. The Hackathon is an opportunity for students - and teachers - to put everything else aside and enjoy an immersive and authentic learning experience.”
