St. Luke's Hosts Coding for a Cause event
Students in grades 4-8 participated in an event that helped develop prototype smartphone apps for local nonprofit organizations.

In December, St. Luke’s hosted Coding for a Cause in its Fireplace Common. The event was run by Random Hacks of Kindness, Jr., a nonprofit organization that empowers students to use technology to positively impact the challenges facing local nonprofits in their communities.
This one-day hackathon was open to students in grades 4-8 who were paired with student mentors—six of whom hailed from St. Luke's Hilltop. Each group helped develop prototype smartphone apps for local nonprofit organizations such as Kids Helping Kids, The Prospector Theater, Bear Hug, and Remarkable STEAM. This highly successful event was organized by St. Luke’s designLab Director Michael Mitchell and RHoK Jr. Executive Director Patrice Gans. Mitchell shared, “It’s so much fun to watch the students engage with the nonprofits and then collaborate to code apps. In just a few hours, they learn about both service and computer science.
