Brainchild of St. Luke’s senior Sebastian Bates, editor-in-chief of the school’s paper, the Sentinel, the Conference will commence at 9 a.m. April 5 on the St. Luke’s campus, 377 North Wilton Rd, New Canaan, CT. Students throughout Connecticut and New York will get the chance to meet professional writers, journalists and editors in a productive and collaborative setting.
Workshops and discussions will cover topics facing student media organizations today, such as the shift to online news. Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and former deputy editorial page editor of the New York Times, Carla Ann Robbins, will be keynote speaker. Mary Beth Tinker, American free speech activist, Geanne Rosenberg, professor and media law expert, and St. Luke’s own Desiree Smock, photojournalist, among others, will lead small-group sessions. After a busy morning, the Conference will end at 1 p.m., following lunch and an awards ceremony. To celebrate its inaugural event, the Fairchester Student Press Association is delighted to host the event for interested students free of charge.
In August of 2013, Bates helped found the Association in order to advance student journalism. This consortium of student newspapers serves hundreds of students in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and Westchester County, New York. Members are committed to maintaining the highest standards in journalism, and have agreed to collaborate on issues that affect them every day. The conference on April 5th is sure to bring many of these issues to life – spread the news!
