NEW CANAAN, CT — A 19-year-old Waterbury man was arrested on a warrant Tuesday charging him with first-degree larceny in connection with the theft of an Audi Q5 SUV from a home on Center Street in New Canaan in early March, according to police.

Jose Diaz picked up at Waterbury Superior Court and transfered to New Canaan where he was being held on bail of $75,000.

State police recovered the abandoned Audi not long after it had been stolen and left on Route 8 in Waterbury. New Canaan police said when it was stolen it had been left unlocked with the keys inside.

New Canaan police pulled fingerprints and DNA evidence from the vehicle and were able to match it to Diaz, which led to detectives obtaining a warrant for his arrest.

"The New Canaan Police continue to remind residents that these crimes are preventable and unless residents take preventative steps to lock their vehicles, and not leave keys inside of their cars, these crimes will continue to occur," wrote New Canaan police in a statement. "Lock it or lose it!"
