Tobacco Compliance Checks Conducted In New Canaan

Nine local establishments were checked last week to ensure they were not illegally selling tobacco products.

NEW CANAAN, CT — Nine New Canaan establishments were checked by police and state officials on Oct. 20 to ensure they were not illegally selling tobacco products to minors, but one business was found to be "non-compliant."

A1 Cellars, on Elm Street, was issued a "first time infraction" fine of $200 for illegally selling either tobacco products or e-cigarettes to minors, according to New Canaan police. Stores are prohibited from selling such products to children under the age of 18 in Connecticut.

New Canaan police worked with members of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program (TPEP) on the compliance checks.

"A supervised minor deployed by the TPEP inspection team entered retail establishments around town to conduct tobacco and electronic cigarette inspections to ensure compliance with state law," wrote police in a statement.

  • Both Mobil Marts on the Merritt Parkway between exits 37 and 38
  • Gulf on South Avenue
  • Mobil Mart on South Avenue
  • Walgreens on Pine Street
  • Acme Supermarket on Elm Street
  • Stewarts Spirits on Elm Street
  • Vegetable Barn & Deli on Cross Street
