Training the Mind at St. Luke’s School

The Mindfulness in Education Conference was co-hosted by St. Luke's School, The Spence School & New Canaan's Community Mindfulness Project.

Parents and teachers from New Canaan and surrounding towns headed to the St. Luke’s Hilltop for The Mindfulness in Education Conference on June 10. The event was co-hosted by The Spence School and New Canaan’s Community Mindfulness Project.

Mark Davis, the Head of School at St. Luke’s, is a practitioner of yoga and meditation. Davis explained the genesis of the conference: “I’m fascinated by the potential of mindfulness. The science around its benefits, for students in particular, is compelling.”

Susan Bauer-Wu, President of the Mind & Life Institute, delivered the keynote. Bauer told attendees: “We live in a society that is very full. We are pushing ourselves to the max. The human mind and the body really can’t keep up with the world we live in. The technology that is part of our every waking hour is having a detrimental effect on us individually and as a society.” Bauer described mindfulness as “an antidote to 21st century life” and the anxiety and depression that can be fed by 24/7 connectivity.
