Vehicles Stolen, Entered In New Canaan: Police

Police said a BMW and a scooter were reported stolen in New Canaan. Handbags, cash and other items were also stolen from cars in town.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A BMW and a scooter were reported stolen in New Canaan over the weekend, and items such as a handbags and cash were stolen from other vehicles parked in town, according to police.

In a news release, Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said a resident reported Friday night a 2008 Kymco Agility 504+ Scooter had been stolen from the New Canaan Parish parking lot.

The resident said the scooter was covered and its tire was locked at the time it was stolen, Krolikowski said. The owner of the scooter had both sets of keys.

On Saturday, a 2018 BMW X5 was reported stolen from Hemlock Hill Road after the vehicle was left unlocked with the key fob inside, Krolikowski said. Later that afternoon, BMW Assist contacted New Canaan police and said the vehicle was on N. Main Street in Bristol.

New Canaan police contacted the Bristol Police Department, who said Bristol officers attempted to stop the driver of the stolen vehicle, however the driver disobeyed the officers' signals and took off. Officers did not pursue the vehicle, Krolikowski said.

The BMW was found un Meriden by local officers the following morning, Krolikowski said.

Items were also reported stolen from two vehicles parked next to each other in the lower lot of Waveny Park, facing Lapahm Community Center, in New Canaan. According to Krolikowski, the thefts occurred between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and both vehicles were locked and forcibly entered.

Handbags left in clear view in both vehicles were reported stolen, Krolikowski said. One handbag contained debit and credit cards, a coronavirus vaccination card, a driver's license, a health insurance card, cash and house keys, and the other contained a driver's license, coronavirus vaccination card, cash, credit cards and a debit card.

Police urge residents to always lock their vehicles and take keys with them, to secure valuables and never leave valuables in a vehicle. According to Krolikowski, identity theft often occurs when driver's licenses and credit cards are stolen.
