PEE WEE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SATURDAY 10/16:
New Canaan BLACK (7th Grade) GAME–6 10/16/10
NC BLACK--20 (6-0) vs. RIDGEFIELD ORANGE--0 (5-2)
NC BLACK SHUTS OUT RIDGEFIELD IN HUGE FCFL BATTLE
This was the unknown for the fine seventh grade team from New Canaan, (NC Black)—a road game against a team that is new to the league this year, one that was on its heels in the Fairfield County Football League standings at 5-1. So, NC black traveled to Ridgefield Saturday and introduced itself as the reigning four year FCFL co-champion by defeating Ridgefield 20-0.
The game was tight throughout with New Canaan taking a 7-0 half-time lead on a John Fox four yard TD run and a Peter Swindell PAT. At the end of the first half it looked as if Ridgefield was going to get an equalizing TD, but that was called back due to a penalty. Key plays in the half included good tackling from Fox, Emerson Logie, Luke Salvati, a nice job of "staying home" by Drew Monroe to make a tackle on the edge, pass break-ups by Lucas Niang, Clayton Burt and Monroe and a fine special teams open field tackle by Ryan Radecki. Fox finished the day with over 100 yards rushing including his second TD, a 45 yard jaunt that gave Black some breathing room early in the third quarter. The 13-0 lead was sustained by a stellar defensive unit that recorded its first shutout of the year.
Plays of note include:
- A 27 yard punt return by Shannon Smith
- A Logie to Monroe pass for 20 yards in which Monroe showed remarkable balance as he made his way down field. These two would connect again in the fourth quarter to seal the win as Monroe found pay-dirt after a 57 yard TD catch and run.
- Swindell handled the PAT with Logie handling the important holding task and NC Black had a formidable 20-0 lead with 4:30 left in the game.
- Tony Pirrone added a couple pass break-ups and Charlie Wood and Thomas Williams made fine tackles as well.
Black, now 6-0 and in a virtual first place tie with its brethren NC Red team will travel to Darien next Sunday to complete its regular season schedule.
