Why Did Canaan Nails Cross the Road?

Maybe to get to a bigger space?

It's definitely a brighter and more visible location on the northeast corner of Main Street at East Avenue.

The nail salon hasn't technically moved and its owner wasn't in this afternoon (I'm expecting her to call back later and I'll put her quotes right in here).

But workers at the new location and the nail salon confirmed that the move is happening.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy said New Canaan Nails will share the space with another store. Murphy declined to identify that store because details haven’t been finalized, but said it’s local retail.

The corner location—often referred to as the “Wire Whisk” space, after one former retail tenant—is a lynchpin for other New Canaan businesses, Murphy said.

“I always say I feel like that location is what started everything in terms of a downward spiral,” she said. “That one went out and then everything followed.” So there’s reason to be optimistic, and Murphy added that the northern area of Main Street has come up with additional retail outfits.

As spring marches toward summer—a time when many leases come up and there’s some “musical stores,” Murphy said—New Canaan’s downtown is looking how it typically looks this time of year.
