Young Braves Falls Just Short in Season Opener

The summer league team keeps it close in Darien.

The Chicken Joe's Young Braves lacrosse team opened up their second season in the Sound Shore Lacrosse League Wednesday night at Darien High School facing Goose Bar & Grill. In a lively back and forth game, Chicken Joe's fell 6-7.

Late in the second half, Chicken Joe's trailed 4-7 but was able to score two quick goals to keep them in the game. With just 30 seconds left, Goose Bar and Grill received a technical foul giving Chicken Joe's a man-up opportunity. But, Chicken Joe's was unable to convert and Goose Bar & Grill got the win.

Jared Horowitz (Greenwich/Penn) led Chicken Joe's with four goals and an assist. In his first Sound Shore career game Chase Bailey (Fairfield Prep/Bucknell) had two goals and two assists. Paul Tortora (Fairfield Prep/St. Michael's) dished out an assist.

"They had some fine players, but it's hard to lose any game by one," said Coach Steve Schmitz (New Canaan/Lehigh). "Adjusting to the pace of this league takes time, but we are headed in the right direction. New guys Chaise Bailey and Kyle Feeney (Greenwich/Bucknell) looked great, Jared Horowitz stepped up his game, and our D was solid."

Chicken Joe's Young Braves takes on Super Star Lacrosse Monday, June 21, at 8 p.m. at SUNY Purchase.
