NEW HAVEN, CT —A man was fatally shot, and a woman critically injured overnight on Shelton Avenue after a domestic incident a few hours earlier, police said. The double shooting came after, according to New Haven police spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell, police had developed a "safety plan" to keep the woman safe.

It was around 11:30 p.m. when cops were called to a house on the 200 block of Shelton Avenue where a 54-year-old woman, police described as the victim, told them about a "physical altercation with her children's father earlier in the evening." Cops looked for the man but did not find him, Dell said, and then, made the safety plan. It's not clear what that plan entailed.

Three hours later, at around 2:30 a.m., cops were dispatched to the "area outside of the residence where the domestic had occurred, in response to reports of gunfire on Shelton Avenue," Dell said.
