2 New Haven Residents Win $625k MacArthur Fellowships

The residents were awarded the five-year fellowships to pursue their respective talents.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Two New Haven residents with connections to Yale University were awarded with $625,000 no-strings-attached fellowships to pursue their talents. The money will be doled out over five years.

Painter Titus Kaphar, 42, works across genres and art mediums on a variety of topics including the legacy of slavery and social concerns, according to his MacArthur Foundation biography. He received an M.F.A. degree in 2006 from Yale University. His work has been exhibited at MoMa PS1, Studio Museum in Harlem and the Yale University Art Gallery along with several other prominent showings.

Gregg Gonsalves, 54, is an epidemiologist and global health advocate. He has worked as an HIV/AIDS activist and has connected the community with researchers and scientists to help broaden knowledge about the disease. His research modeling has helped identified undiagnosed HIV-positive persons.

Gonsalves received his B.S. and Ph.D from Yale University and is now an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases, associate (adjunct) professor and research scholar at Yale Law School, and co-director of the Global Health Justice Partnership and the Collaboration for Research Integrity and Transparency.
