NEW HAVEN, CT — Tayna Rodriguez, 26, of New Haven was shot and killed just after 1 a.m., Sunday, police said. Right after the shooting, according to New Haven police spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell, a man called 911 and told dispatchers "he just shot someone on Saltonstall Avenue."
When police first arrived at the scene, they learned that a fight broke out on Saltonstall Avenue between Leon Guerrero, 30, and two other men, Dell said. Rodriguez had gotten out of her car, "approached the group involved in the altercation, and was struck by gunfire."
Rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, she died from her injuries, Dell said. As detectives from the department's Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification got there to interview potential witnesses and collect evidence, the dispatch center gave investigators a description of the man who identified himself as the shooter, Dell said. Cops found the man "with his hands raised, who also fit the description of the shooter provided by dispatch," she said.
