NEW HAVEN, CT —A 46-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the rape of a child beginning at age six through age 16, according to State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr.
But Demarres Taft, Sr., of New Haven, will see his sentence suspended after serving 15 years, Doyle said Judge Maureen M. Keegan ruled on June 9.
In April, a jury found Taft guilty of first-degree sexual assault. Doyle said according to evidence introduced at trial, Taft sexually assaulted the victim repeatedly starting at the age of six years old and continued doing so until she was 16.
The case was investigated by New Haven police Detective Samantha Romano and the NHPD Special Victims Unit.
