1. Update: Transformer Fire Sparks Power Outage In Science Park Area: Yale Public Safety (patch.com) — New Haven residents around Science Park briefly lost electricity and access to Winchester Avenue after a transformer fire knocked out power near 2 and 25 Science Park, prompting a Yale Public Safety alert. Power and road access have since been restored, but neighbors were urged to stay aware of earlier closures between Munson and Division streets.
2. Community Celebrates Trowbridge Recreation Center Grand Opening, Trowbridge Square Park Revitalization (patch.com) — Neighbors in New Haven's Hill neighborhood are celebrating the grand opening of the renovated Trowbridge Recreation Center, a long-vacant historic building now offering programs for youth, seniors, and families. City and state funding also helped upgrade Trowbridge Square Park across the street, adding new play equipment, improved paths, and displays honoring the area's history.
3. Alders Approve Another Lab-Office Dev Deal (newhavenindependent.org) — New Haven's Board of Alders has approved a land deal allowing Winstanley Enterprises to build a new quantum-tech and lab-office hub at 2 Church Street, bringing an expected 300 Unilever jobs and a home for QuantumCT. The project will also fund a public plaza reconnecting the Hill and Downtown, upgrade Church Street infrastructure, and include local workforce training and small-contractor goals.
4. New Haven to activate red light cameras, speed cameras throughout the city (wtnh.com) — New Haven will switch on new red light and speed cameras at seven locations starting Sept. 15, with only warning notices sent for the first 30 days. Beginning Oct. 15, drivers who speed or run red lights at these sites will face fines of $50 for a first offense and $75 for subsequent violations, with more cameras coming later.
5. After-school program begins for New Haven students (wtnh.com) — New Haven families now have after-school care at every K-8 school, with a city-backed program serving about 700 students for $25 a week or free for qualifying families. Kids get tutoring, classroom time, and gym activities through a partnership with the New Haven Boys' and Girls' Club, and enrollment is still open for interested parents.
