1. Heads-Up Food Entrepreneurs: CitySeed, Hispanic Federation Day-Long CT Food Business Lab at Southern Oct. 6. (patch.com) — Food entrepreneurs in and around New Haven are invited to a free, day-long CT Food Business Lab at Southern Connecticut State University, led by New Haven nonprofit CitySeed and the Hispanic Federation. The Oct. 6 program will feature workshops, one-on-one advising, and networking aimed at helping especially immigrant and BIPOC food business owners access knowledge, capital, and community connections. Bilingual English-Spanish support and SBA funding underscore the event's focus on inclusive local economic growth.
   

2. NHPD Assistant Chief Bertram N. Ettienne Honored With 2026 Bereavement Care Network Community Service Award (patch.com) — New Haven residents are learning that Assistant Chief Bertram N. Ettienne has received the 2026 Bereavement Care Network Community Service Award for his work with victims' families and the wider New Haven community. His decades of service as a homicide detective and leader in the New Haven Police Department, combined with his own family's experience with gun violence, highlight the impact of BCN's support for grieving families across Greater New Haven.
   

3. City Adopts Facial-Recognition Tech (newhavenindependent.org) — New Haven is rolling out new facial-recognition time clocks at 11 city worksites by the end of September, replacing older fingerprint systems for about 340 employees. Officials stress the devices store only encrypted data, not photos, and are for timekeeping rather than surveillance, while police say they rarely use facial recognition and never for arrests.
   

4. New Haven students press mayor on addressing youth gun violence (wtnh.com) — New Haven high school students sat down with Mayor Justin Elicker to share emotional stories about youth gun violence and press for safer schools and better conditions. Joined by Gov. Ned Lamont and local lawmakers, the conversation also highlighted concerns about underfunded school facilities and staffing, with Elicker pledging continued dialogue and support for students across the city.
   

5. University of New Haven's MBA Program Ranked Among the Best in U.S. (newhaven.edu) — Students and professionals around New Haven may be interested to know the University of New Haven's MBA program has been ranked among the top 100 in the U.S. and top 301 globally. The recognition, along with a new business school building, highlights growing opportunities for local residents seeking a career-focused, nationally recognized graduate business education close to home.
