Coast Guard units in Long Island Sound were busy during the fourth of July holiday, responding to seven distress cases including a search for missing swimmers, assisting in dewatering vessels, and investigation possible flare sightings. Unfortunately, first responders were not able to save one of the victims. The Coast Guard reminds everyone that tidal currents within Long Island Sound and off the south shore of Long Island are treacherous and may reach speeds of up to 5 miles per hour. Even strong swimmers may be taken by the current and swept out to sea. Please be vigilant, check the weather before heading out to enjoy the water, wear a life jacket, do not swim alone and tell someone where you are going. These simple precautions may save your life and ensure you have an enjoyable, safe day on the water.
