Derby police helped the MTA’s Emergency Services Unit Wednesday night to arrest Sanchez, they reported. Sanchez was taken into custody without incident, police noted, but not before having family members including a child leave the home.

MTAPD Chief of Operations Thomas Taffe said that investigators “believe Sanchez fired the gun.” They say they found the gun in Sanchez’s home after obtaining a search warrant.

At around 8:30 p.m. on July 5, a report of shots-fired at Union Station was received by the MTAPD. It was discovered, authorities said, that a man had been shot multiple times.

A preliminary investigation found that the victim and two others were on a train when a dispute began that continued on the platform between tracks 12 and 14, authorities said. There was gunfire targeting the victim, according to the transit police. Taffe said it was “Not a random attack.” The suspect and victim knew each other and the victim was targeted, he said. Seriously injured, the victim was recently released from the hospital, Taffe said.

Following the shooting, two suspects fled, and the victim entered a nearby train, police said. Responding medics transported the injured man to Yale-New Haven Hospital in critical condition. Authorities said MTA police moved quickly to treat the man. New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said had that not happened, "We'd be talking about a homicide here."

The second suspect is still at large, though investigators said they have a "very close" eye on him.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker noted that Union Station is a very busy and "safe" transportation hub. He said the shooting was "Very, very, very unusual."
