Firefighters' Make Quick Work Of a Smoky 'Rubbish Fire' in Yale University College Basement Thursday Morning

NEW HAVEN, CT — Fire authorities are investigating a "rubbish fire" in the basement of a Yale University college, according to the fire chief.

At 10:26 a.m., firefighters responded to an activated fire alarm at 242 Elm St. in downtown New Haven. The building is home to Yale's Saybrook College.

"When crews arrived, they found significant smoke and upgraded the response," New Haven Fire Chief Dan Coughlin told Patch. He said fire crews found the fire in the building's basement and "quickly extinguished it."

Coughlin said there were no injuries and the college is open. He added that the cause is under investigation

A Yale alert was issued for the campus community at 11:05 a.m. advising people in the building to "evacuate immediately," and all others "avoid the area until further notice."
