Fleeing Fire, Woman Jumps From 2nd Floor, Caught By City Workers

​​A woman pushed an air conditioner out of a window and jumped to escape the pre-dawn Shelton Avenue blaze, New Haven firefighters said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Trapped on the second floor of a Shelton Avenue house on fire, a woman escaped by shoving an air conditioner out of a window, and jumped to safety, the New Haven Fire Department tweeted early this morning.

Just after 5:30 a.m., a fire that began in a 2 and 1/2 story wood-frame house at 350 Shelton Ave., was reported.

Firefighters reported that a resident had jumped out the window to flee the blaze, and local media reported that the woman was caught by New Haven public works employees, who, WTNH reported, were injured but not seriously.

Three adults and three children were inside the home and all made it out safely and firefighters also rescued a cat, according to local media reports.

The fire is reported to have begun in a kitchen.
