Gunfire Erupts Near Controversial New Haven Bar

It's the third gunfire/shooting incident near the bar in the past year, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A vehicle was shot at outside of Roosevelt's Bar on Whalley Avenue early Wednesday. Police were flagged down around 1 a.m. by a person reporting a chaotic scene. An officer heard gunfire and saw a Subaru Forester leave the area.

The officer pulled the vehicle over and noticed its window had been shot at, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

Police were contacted two hours later by a man who admitted to firing at the vehicle. He said the driver sped directly at him.

"He said the man drove off, made a U-turn and sped toward him," Hartman said. "He told officers he jumped into his own car but couldn’t get it started in time to flee. He said the man struck his car and he thought the man would harm him. He said he fired at the driver, who in turn fled."

Video of the incident generally corroborated the victim's story. He has a valid pistol permit.
