Fatal Hit-And-Run Victim Identified: New Haven PD

Police have found the offending vehicle.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Police have found the vehicle used in a deadly hit-and-run Monday night in New Haven. The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. at Whalley Avenue and Central Avenue.

The motorcycle operator has been identified as Mark Hoffler, 51, of New Haven. He was declared dead after arriving at the hospital.

"At the point of impact, the motorcycle operator was thrown into the air. He landed on top of the car’s hood. Witnesses said his head went through the windshield," said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman. To sign up for New Haven breaking news alerts and more, click here.

The car took off eastbound on Whalley Avenue and eventually turned left onto Fitch Street. The victim dislodged from the windshield and crashed to the ground.

Police have identified the involved vehicle as a 2002 Mercury Sable. The vehicle was found on Beaver Hill Road in New Haven Tuesday morning. It has been confiscated and will undergo a forensic exam, Hartman said. The driver hasn't been found.
