Homicide Investigated In New Haven

A person was shot and killed early Friday.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A former New Haven man was shot and killed in New Haven early Friday morning. The city's ShotSpotter system detected shots fired in the area of Whalley Avenue and Fitch Street at 3:08 a.m.

The victim Kenneth Cooper, 35, now of Waterbury was shot outside of the Exxon gas station on Whalley Avenue, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman. A woman drove him to the hospital where he died shortly after.

Neither the woman or Cooper are associated with the gas station. The crime scene is being analyzed by detectives.

"Investigators are following strong leads but are asking for the public’s help," Hartman said. "Anyone with information valuable to detectives is urged to phone them at 203-946-6304. Calls may be made anonymously."
