The man was attempting to run away from a crash inside the tunnel on Route 15 and was arrested, according to state police.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A Bridgeport man who was attempting to run away from a crash scene inside the tunnel on Route 15 was blocked by several motorists and arrested, according to Connecticut State Police. At about 7:25 p.m. on May 20, state troopers responded to Route 15 North inside the Heroes Tunnel (formerly known as West Rock Tunnel) near Exit 59 on the report of a two-car collision with one of the vehicles rolled over.

Troopers found both vehicles were blocking the roadway and one, a Nissan Versa, was on its roof and unoccupied. The other vehicle, a Subaru Crosstrek, was in the right lane with heavy damage to the front and rear end. The operator of the Subaru told police that she wasn’t hurt and neither were her two passengers. She also told police that the operator of the Nissan ran fled from the crash scene and was running in the tunnel.

Several passing motorists blocked the suspect, identified as Kevin Guerrero, from leaving the tunnel and he was taken into custody, according to the police report. Police said Guerrero, 22, was combative and resisted arrest as troopers were trying to put him in the police cruiser.

Police said Guerrero was driving the Nissan, which is owned by Hertz, erratically and at a high rate of speed while weaving in and out of lanes when it collided with the Subaru. The crash sent the Subaru off the roadway to the left where it collided with the concrete wall inside the tunnel, according to police. The Nissan then rolled over as a result of the crash. Guerrero was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Guerrero was charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility, operating without insurance, operating without insurance, operating with a suspended license and interfering with police. He was unable to post a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
