Murder Arrest Made In New Haven

A man was arrested by police one day after a fatal shooting, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A convicted felon was arrested after a murder on Whalley Avenue Friday. Joshua James Council, 31, of New Haven had shot and killed Kenneth Cooper near the Exxon Gas Station, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

Police arrested Council after witness interviews and other evidence was collected. Officer Paul Vitale spotted Council while out on his beat Saturday morning. He and other patrol officers arrested Council without incident, Hartman said.

Council, who was out on parole was charged with murder, criminal possession of a pistol without a permit and violation of probation. He is being held on a $1 million bond.
