New Haven Animal Shelter Scheduled for Renovations

The facility takes in about 1,400 cats and dogs each year.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Badly-needed renovations are coming to the New Haven Police Animal Shelter thanks to a $95,000 grant.

The grant from the John T. and Jane A. Weiderhold Foundation administered through the Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut Inc. will double the space for new cat kennels and help install noise reduction panels.

The reception area and officers will also create a more friendly space for prospective adopters to meet animals.

Friends of the New Haven Animal Shelter applied for the grant. The group of volunteers helps supplement paid staff in fundraising and spending time with the animals.

"The architectural firm of Silver, Petrucelli and Associates was hired to design the project and is supported by the Friends through fundraisers and a grant from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven Lillian and Henry A. Konopacke Foundation," said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

Renovations are set to begin April 10 and completion is expected by the end of May.

“This is a good start”, said shelter director, Officer Joseph Manganiello. “All of these improvements are long overdue and much needed. Our animals need a more comfortable environment. We’re grateful to our Friends and benefactors for more than just a new coat of paint."

New Haven's animal shelter is the second largest municipal shelter in the state with 65 dog runs and more than 3,200 visitors annually.

Those who want to donate to the shelter can do so through the Friends of the New Haven Animal Shelter website.
