New Haven Homicides Hit 50-Year Low: Report

The city saw homicides drop while other large Connecticut cities saw a sharp increase.

NEW HAVEN, CT — The city hit a 50-year record low with seven reported homicides in 2017. The low number of homicides came during the same year in which other Connecticut cities saw a doubling rate.

The city hit a recent high mark of 34 homicides in 2011, which was the highest since 1991, according to the New Haven Register.

Bridgeport this year had 23 homicides and Hartford had 29, according to the New Haven Independent.

Non-fatal shootings are also down in New Haven with 61 in 2017 compared to 63 the previous year. There has been a drop every year for six years.

Chief Anthony Campbell said focusing crime prevention on a small group of likely offenders has helped lower the rate. The department also had a large number of promotions in recent years that helped fill supervisory roles.
