NEW HAVEN, CT — A 35-year-old New Haven man already on the state's sex offender list was sentenced to 40 years in prison for an attempted 2019 rape, prosecutors said.
Larry Makins will see his 40 years suspended after serving 30 years, according to John P. Doyle Jr., New Haven State’s Attorney.
In April, Makins was convicted by a Superior Court jury of attempted first-degree sexual assault and first-degree burglary, records show.

Doyle said that according to evidence introduced at trial, Makins broke into an apartment in New Haven on April 10, 2019, and attempted to sexually assault the resident who was sleeping at the time. The victim fought off the attacker and then ran from the apartment to a neighbor for help. Police used written medication prescriptions Makins had dropped inside the apartment at the time of the attack and DNA evidence to link him to the crime, Doyle said.
The case was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Stacey M. Miranda, with assistance from Inspectors Alfonso Vazquez and Peter Lavelle.
