New Haven Man Embezzled Thousands From Health-Care Agency: Police

Hamden Police said the man received stolen funds into his bank account even while he was incarcerated.

HAMDEN, CT — A New Haven man is accused of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from a home-health care agency in Hamden and even received stolen funds while he was incarcerated, according to police. On May 7, Hamden Police received a complaint from the owner of the agency, located on Connolly Parkway, saying that about $68,000 was embezzled from her company, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said investigation revealed that an employee was hired to manage payroll and bookkeeping and the employee subsequently deposited nearly $19,000 in stolen funds into her the bank account of her boyfriend, Anthony Washington.

Washington was also employed at the home health care agency as a “companion,” according to Smith. Further investigation revealed that while Washington was incarcerated in prison for 10 months in 2017, he continued to receive stolen funds via direct deposit into his bank account, Smith said.

Det. Scott Levenduski conducted an investigation that led to an arrest warrant for Washington.

Washington, 42, of Bassett Street in New Haven, was arrested Aug. 28 and charged with first-degree larceny. Washington, who was detained on a court-ordered $10,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 11.
