New Haven Murder Suspect Confirmed Killed In Va. Shootout

New Haven's "Public Enemy Number One" was killed in a shootout with Virginia police.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Police confirmed that New Haven's "Public Enemy Number One" Tramaine Poole was killed in a shootout with state police in Virginia Wednesday.

He was a suspect in the shooting death of a 28-year-old woman Tyekqua Nesbitt May 31 near Wilmot Road and Wintergreen Avenue in New Haven. The woman was fatally shot in her car while her children, ages 6 and 11, were in the car, according to police. His wife also accused him of shooting her on May 7 on Henry Street. Police Chief Anthony Campbell said he was relieved that the danger posed by Poole no longer exists, according to the New Haven Register.

A stolen vehicle was traveling north on I-95 and refused to stop for a Virginia state trooper shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police. Shots were fired from the pursued vehicle. The chase ended near Loco School and Bells Roads in Sussex County. Police positioned themselves to stop the vehicle and a suspect continued firing at police vehicles.

A bullet pierced a police cruiser and struck a police canine. The police canine didn't survive his injuries.
State Police returned fire. The male suspect died at the scene. His body will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond, VA for an autopsy. A female passenger was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
