Obituary: John L. McGuerty, AIA

His heart was in New Haven and he fought vigorously to make it a wonderful place to live and work.

John L. McGuerty, AIA of Guilford, CT passed away peacefully at CT Hospice in Branford on January 21 2019. He was predeceased by his son Rob McGuerty, and survived by his former wife Nancy McGuerty and his devoted and loving friend of 40 years Melinda Daniels. John was adopted by Drs. Frank and Lillian McGuerty from New Hydepark, NY.

He attended Peddie School for Boys, 1952, Yale University (Psychology), 1952-56, and Yale School of Architecture (M.A. Architecture 1957-63). While in the School of Architecture he was a guest lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Design, Connecticut Chapter AIP, and NAHRO National Conference. Before his retirement he spent his entire career with New Haven City Plan Department.

He began as a model builder while at Yale, and eventually became City Planner. He was a trusted member of the Administration to whom many came for guidance.

His heart was in New Haven and he fought vigorously to make it a wonderful place to live and work. He was a very talented architect, artist and wood worker. He possessed a wonderful sense of humor. He loved sailing and spent many hours on his boat Gandalf. He was a member of The Sportsmen's Club of Guilford.

Friends are invited to a memorial service on Friday February 1 2019 at 11 am at the First Congregational Church, 122 Broad St. Guilford. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd, Branford, CT06405 or Forgotten Felines, PO Box 734, Clinton, CT 06413 or the charity of one's choice.
