Pride Flag Raised On Green 'In Solidarity With LGBTQ Community, Response to Trump Removal Of Stonewall Flag'

NEW HAVEN, CT—A Pride flag was raised Wednesday on the New Haven Green, Mayor Justin Elicker said, "in solidarity with New Haven’s LGBTQ community" and in response to "President Donald Trump’s recent directive to remove the Pride flag from the Stonewall National Monument in New York City."

The site is located in front of the Stonewall Inn and commemorates the LGBTQ rights movement.

"The Stonewall National Monument commemorates the courageous, difficult, and ongoing journey of our LGBTQ residents towards greater inclusion and equality in our society," Elicker said.

"President Trump’s directive to remove the Pride flag from the Stonewall National Monument is that latest example of his and his administration’s assault on LGBTQ rights and attempts to erase and harm our LGBTQ neighbors," Elicker said. "In New Haven, we know our city and country are at their best when all our residents’ rights are fully protected and all our residents are fully included and celebrated. New Haven is proudly a welcoming and inclusive city, and the Pride flag proudly flies high on the New Haven Green."

This action is the latest in the city’s ongoing efforts to support and defend its LGBTQ residents. At the beginning of President Trump’s second term, the City of New Haven—in partnership with the New Haven Pride Center, the New Haven Board of Alders, other nonprofit organizations, and community members—issued an LGBTQ+ emergency guide to help residents know their rights and get connected to resources, organizations, and information.

In November 2025, the City of New Haven received a score of 100 on the 2025 Municipal Equality Index, a comprehensive assessment of LGBTQ+ equality in the areas of municipal law, policies, and services that is conducted annually by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization.

In addition, New Haven had the added distinction of being one of four spotlighted cities of the 506 cities that are evaluated in the MEI report.
