Two New Haven Cops Resign Amid Background Check Scandal
The police academy class scheduled to start soon has been postponed as investigators review the matter.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Two New Haven Police officer have resigned and a police academy class start date has been delayed as the department digs through a background check scandal that has called the process into question.
Candidate officers are allowed to review their background check reports and go before the Board of Police Commissioners. Revelations came up during the process. Officers Leah Russo and Kristian Ramirez resigned from the department after the investigations were announced.
Each candidate's file is being reviewed by internal affairs, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

"At this point, it seems unlikely the candidacy of any applicant or finalist was influenced," he said.
The police academy class scheduled to begin on June 25 has been postponed for about a month or until the department sorts through the matter.

“I am truly disappointed. The process involved in an applicant’s investigation should be the last that needs to be investigated," said Chief Anthony Campbell. "It is clear we must review our procedures regarding this matter. Our community must be able to trust that the process is an honorable one and conducted by women and men with great integrity."
