Waterbury Man, 39, Dies In Hospital Following Assault In New Haven: PD
The cause of Maurice Grimes' death is as yet unknown, cops say, as medical staff don't know if it was due to the assault; an autopsy is set.

NEW HAVEN, CT —A 39-year-old Waterbury man has died after being taken to the hospital following an assault in New Haven Monday, police said. But it's not clear if he died as a result of wounds "consistent" with the assault, or another reason, so an autopsy is being done, cops said.
According to New Haven police spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell, Monday evening around 7 p.m., cops were called to a report of an assault at a residence in the 200 block of Norton Street. They found Maurice Grimes of Waterbury, inside the apartment with apparent wounds consistent with an assault, she said. Taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for medical treatment, doctors days later told investigators that Grimes had passed away, Dell said. Grimes' cause of death hasn't been determined, Dell said, "as doctors were unable to ascertain whether it was a result of the physical altercation or due to medical reasons."
Grimes' body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, police said.

Meanwhile, police learned that an argument broke at the Norton Street home and "escalated into a physical altercation, leading to Grimes' injuries," Dell said. Wednesday, two days after being taken to YNHH, cops were told that Grimes’ condition had worsened with detectives from the Major Crimes Unit assigned to conduct an in-depth investigation, Dell said.
"Detectives are actively pursuing several leads in their ongoing investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the assault and subsequent death of Maurice Grimes," Dell said.
