A New Haven Independent report identified the woman as Jana Minor, which police confirmed for Patch.

The driver of the car that hit her stayed on the scene, Bruckhart said, adding the person "cooperated with officers."

"The initial investigation indicates that the pedestrian attempted to cross Orange Street outside of a marked crosswalk," Bruckhart said, and "As she entered the roadway, she was struck by the vehicle, which was traveling south."

She was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where her injuries are considered life-threatening, Bruckhart said.

The police Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene, and while investigating, the street was closed for several hours.
