In early May, a graduate student living off campus on Elm Street woke up to find an unknown man in their residence and was sexually assaulted at gunpoint before the man fled, The Hartford Courant reported.

The university saw a total of 16 burglaries in 2021, 31 burglaries in 2020, and 39 burglaries in 2019, according to a Yale police crime report filed in 2022.

In the letter, Yale's chief of police Anthony Campbell offered the following precautions to help deter criminal activity.

  • Always lock your doors and windows.
  • Keep hedges near doors and windows trimmed.
  • Make sure your entrance is well-lit.
  • Use a locking device that allows the window to open a few inches for ventilation.
  • Secure window air conditioners where possible.
