Catholic School in Newington Closes Abruptly
An administrator said the school "would not have been able to sustain itself financially."

NEWINGTON, CT — Just days before the opening of the new school year, officials of a Catholic school in Newington have decided to cease operations.
Saint Mary School, a K-8 institution which has served students of Newington and surrounding towns since 1958, will not open for the 2016-17 school year, according to a written statement from new school administrator Rev. Shawn Daly.
“Saint Mary School would have run out of capital midway through the school year. In making this agonizing decision, the students and their families were always top of mind and in our prayers,” Daly said in the statement.

According to the school's web site, the first day of classes was scheduled for Aug. 31, giving parents less than two weeks to find an alternative for their children.
There were 109 students enrolled at the Willard Avenue school, and administrators stated they hope to transition students to the newly-formed St. Brigid-St. Augustine Partnership School in West Hartford.
