Newington Resident Recognized for Volunteerism
She and other employees of Eversource Energy are being highlighted during National Volunteer Month.

BERLIN, CT — When Newington resident Karlyn Lempa isn’t busy managing Eversource’s energy efficiency funds, she’s at the stables working closely with people and horses at Manes & Motions Therapeutic Riding Center in Middletown. The 7-year senior analyst with Eversource’s energy efficiency department began volunteering at the non-profit more than three years ago.
The riding center is part of the Hospital of Special Care Community in New Britain and uses equine-assisted activities to help people living with physical, emotional, or cognitive special needs. Lempa spends seven hours of her own time every week assisting with riding lessons and taking special care of the horses.
“You may have a hard day at work, but when you go there, there are people and children with a lot more serious issues,” said Lempa. “You get to help them and bring joy into their lives. It puts things into perspective. It’s nice to give back, especially with an organization like this.”

Every year Lempa spends nearly 350 hours at the riding center. This includes assisting with therapeutic riding lessons for people of all ages, some with post-traumatic stress disorder, others with autism, physical handicaps, and some that may just need a boost of self-confidence. She also spends time feeding, brushing, and walking the horses.
During National Volunteer Month, Eversource is recognizing employees like Lempa who inspire, encourage, and help their communities while demonstrating that, by working together, there can be a positive impact.
