Thief Stole $4K From Newington Parks And Rec: Police

NEWINGTON, CT — Police are searching for a thief after an envelope with cash, checks, and credit card information totaling $4000 was stolen from the Mortensen Community Center Gymnasium Friday, Dec. 13. Police responded to a larceny complaint at 8 p.m. on that date.

Newington Park and Recreation employees were collecting registration fees for the upcoming high school recreational basketball league in the gymnasium. Approximately 100 teenagers were present during the registration, police said.

At some point during the event, an employee left a manila envelope containing the cash, checks, and credit card information unattended on a table in the gymnasium.

When the employee returned to the registration table a short time later, the envelope was gone. After checking with staff members, it was evident the envelope had been stolen.

The Newington Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying those responsible for the theft. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Officer Justin Thibault at (860) 666-8445.
